![]() We Were Number One
By Ron Miller Now listen up compadres!
a tale we now will tell:
About pure guts and courage; about a job done well. Of heroes in biplanes, spruce, canvas and glue; Of blue smoke and noise, and comradeships true. You see-- Some fourscore and five times we've circled the sun; Ere eight daring flyers a new race did run. They set out from here, yes, at this very place. You think it was easy? That wasn't the case! Some five foreign nations with hats in the ring; All wanted that record - they wanted the "bling." But a two-service effort was our saving grace; And it all came together right here on this base. Four new Navy airplanes with monstrous gas tanks; The crews, they were Army - to them we owe thanks. Ahead of their time; yes, ahead of their day; A primitive effort, but they found their way. Out they thundered through storms, ice and rain; To seize the brass ring - and our glory to gain. And they kept right on going in spite of the cost; The nation behind them, the coin had been tossed! They circled the earth for the very first time; They set a new record - a record sublime. It gave the world notice to see what they'd done; No questions, it's certain, we were number one. |
