In
dedicating the Sand Point History Book, Captain Nick Bontrop said, "From
the inception, The Station was confronted with many challenges, yet it
continued to be a front-runner playing a valuable role in support
of operational forces in the Pacific Fleet during World War II, the
Korean Police Action, the Vietnam conflict and most recently the gulf
war." Many of the
stations components used in this support included plane repairs, pilot
training, etc. To achieve repairs and training, devices were required
to complete these tasks. These devices are what can be displaced in the
museum and the word "SUPPORT" is quite applicable.
There are many museums
still trying to be established and if building No. 2 can become a
museum, it will need a name that is
different and will stand out from the others.
Currently: The mission of Naval Support Activity (NAS) US Forces at Sigonella, Rota, and Souda Bay is to provide Command Control and Logistics Support to US and NATO Operating Forces. These three facilities are undergoing a transformation from Maritime Patrol Airfields to Multi-role “Hubs” providing crucial air-links for USAF strategic airlift in support of CENTCOM and Africa Area contingency operations. The word "Logistics" covers all the would be historical componets. Below are a few examples: |
